When is generosity at its best, caring enough about money to look after it sensibly and consulting others about how to best use it. In this way, spending is orderly and planned, so that there is enough for personal needs, and also enough to give to the proper recipients as well.
Not to destroy a fruit tree, as it is stated ‘You shall not destroy its tree.’
Included in this prohibition is that a person should be mindful of their possessions and not waste them in vain, even something worth a mere perutah
A person’s sustenance is determined for him from Rosh Hashanah, etc.
And Rashi explained: One should be careful not to spend excessively, for he will not be given more than what was decreed for him.
This serves as strong rebuke for our times, as unfortunately, many people transgress this and do not pay attention to how they manage their household expenses. They indulge in excess luxuries without restraint, and this harmful practice has led many to ruin. In the end, it drives a person to theft and dishonesty, as well as disgrace and shame.
Fortunate is the one who strengthens his heart, resists temptations, and manages his household expenses wisely, in proportion to his means, and not beyond.
Protecting one’s money is also considered somewhat of a mitzvah
From this, any thoughtful person can gain wise counsel, not to spend beyond what is appropriate for their means, for doing so leads a person to steal from others when they seek to maintain appearances but cannot afford it.
Mar Zutra the son of Rav Nachman said: Give life to your youth. From here, the Torah teaches proper behavior that a person should not accustom his son to meat and wine.
Give life to your young ones – teach your household the ways of life: to be content with simple sustenance.
And he should not accustom [his children] to fine foods, expensive clothing, or the pleasures of people, so that when they are unable to obtain what they are used to, they do not turn to theft. As our Sages of blessed memory said (Sanhedrin 72), the Torah foresaw the future of the wayward and rebellious son—that when he can no longer satisfy his desires, he will end up robbing others.
Therefore, every sensible person will act with wisdom and manage their ways with judgment—neither being overly stingy nor overly extravagant.
